Course Overview
Attendees will become familiar with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies, their application and interpretation of the ouput. The workshop will guide participants through an NGS workflow starting with an introduction to the technologies and experimental design. This is followed by an examination of assembly strategies, quality control measures and the extraction of biologically meaningful information from the complete genomic sequence.
Prerequisites
While there is no strict prerequisite, it is recommended that participants in the NGS workshop have attended the Programming session. At the very least it would be very useful to work through the first six sections of this brief tutorial www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Teaching/Unix/ and the first seven chapters of this interactive tutorial http://tryruby.org/. This should take no longer than 2 hours.
