Programming for Biologists

Course Overview

Attendees will become familiar with the concepts of planning, designing and creating relatively simple computer programs for biological applications. The workshop aims to provide a foundation of knowledge that attendees will build upon with the subsequent application of skills gained over the two days. The course focusses on the Ruby programming language (www.ruby-lang.org).

Prerequisites

Participants are expected to be familiar with command line operations, preferably UNIX, therefore we strongly recommend reading the first six sections of this brief tutorial www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Teaching/Unix/ and the first seven chapters of this interactive tutorial http://tryruby.org/. This should take no longer than 2 hours, and it will be assumed that participants have completed these prerequisites prior to attending the workshop.
