Introduction to Radiological Protection

Scope

This five-day professional level course is intended to provide an in-depth introduction to the theory and practice of protection against ionising radiation. It will introduce the attendee to the different types of radioactive decay and the physical and biological properties of ionising radiation, the methods of controlling the exposure of individuals to radiation, and the legislation associated with radiological protection. Issues connected with radon exposure, waste management, low specific activity materials, radiological emergencies and radiation measurement will also be covered. The course concludes with perspectives on radiological protection within general industry, the medical sector, and the nuclear industry. No prior knowledge of radiological protection or associated legislation is assumed.

The course will be delivered primarily through lectures as far as possible in a qualitative way, although some topics will require the use of basic mathematics. Some practical exercises and visits within the HPA will be included. The course is not examined.
