Laser Safety Course

Aim

This two-day course offers comprehensive coverage of the important aspects of laser safety. It provides an excellent foundation for those new to laser safety as well as experienced users. The course is also an ideal introduction to the more advanced five-day Laser Safety Management Course.

Attendance

The following should attend this course:

  • Laser Safety Officers who manage laser applications of limited complexity
  • Company Safety Officers and Advisers involved with laser safety
  • those wishing to extend their knowledge of laser safety
  • laser users in companies and research establishments
  • those involved with servicing, testing and maintenance of lasers or laser systems and products.

Course format

This is an active learning experience with comprehensive course material referencing to current British Standards. Course activities include case studies, practical exercises and group tutorials as well as a visit to the university's laser laboratory. All delegates will be provided with a set of comprehensive course notes and an attendance certificate.

Course presenters

The course is usually delivered by three senior staff from the HPA Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards (CRCE) and Loughborough University.

Typical programme

Day 1

  • Ubiquitous laser and introduction to laser safety management.
  • Laser beam hazards, classification and legislation.
  • Non-beam hazards and beam measurement.

Day 2

  • Practical laser safety control measures.
  • Laboratory tour.
  • Putting numbers to laser beam hazards.
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment.
  • Introduction to the Laser Safety Management Programme.

Venue

This course is fully residential and includes all meals and accommodation for the duration of the course. It will be held at the imago at Burleigh Court International Conference Centre, Loughborough. The conference centre has recently undergone major refurbishment and the Burleigh Springs Leisure Complex, with indoor swimming pool, sauna, spa, gym and skin care/therapy centre, is available to delegates. Ample free car parking is provided.

Fee

The fee is £845, which  includes all meals and accommodation from dinner on the evening prior to the course to refreshments on the afternoon of the second day of the course.
