Training in Artifical Optical Radiation - Background Information

Provision of advice on radiation protection, particularly in the area of optical radiation, requires a unique blend of scientific disciplines. The HPA Radiation Protection Division has teams of accomplished researchers active in areas, such as physical measurements, hazard assessment, biology and epidemiology. Experts from any of these disciplines can be called upon to present modules towards a course programme customised to your needs and delivered at a level and duration to suit you.

Topics covered could include the following.

  • The biological effects of optical radiation.
  • Solar and artificial sources of exposure.
  • Environmental and social exposures to ultraviolet radiation.
  • Measurement techniques.
  • Calibration and traceability.
  • Protection guidelines and methods of hazard assessment.
  • Methods of protection, including engineering, administrative and personal controls.
  • Clothing protection methods and labelling.
  • Sunglasses, structures for shade and sunscreens.
  • Areas of advice and education policy towards reducing sun exposure.
  • Safe practices with respect to optical radiation exposure in the workplace.

Courses can be delivered at the Training Centre at the HPA Radiation Protection Division Headquarters, Chilton, Oxfordshire or, wherever possible, at a location of your choice.

General and specialist training courses on optical radiation can be arranged. Contact the Laser and Optical Radiation Dosimetry Group, HPA Radiation Protection Division, for further information, stating your requirements:
