Human biomonitoring (HBM) is an important tool that may be used to assess exposure to, and uptake of, chemicals.The HPA is developing a programme of work in this area. The applicability of HBM to investigate acute exposure following a chemical incident is a particular interest.. Another area of research relates to the need for realistic background data on "normal" levels of chemicals in blood and other tissues of the general population.
