Laboratory of Gastrointestinal Pathogens (LGP)

The Laboratory of Gastrointestinal Pathogens (LGP) provides reference services for a wide range of gastrointestinal, and food and water-borne pathogens.  It is in the Department for Gastrointestinal, Emerging and Zoonotic Infections (GEZI), formed by the integration of epidemiological and microbiological services.

LGP was created by the merger of the Laboratory of Enteric Pathogens and the Food Safety Microbiology Laboratory.  LGP now consists of four reference units:

• the Salmonella Reference Unit (SRU)
• the Foodborne Pathogens Reference Unit (FBRU)
• the Gastrointestinal Infections Reference Unit (GIRU) 
  which contains the former E coli, Shigella, Yersinia and Vibrio Reference Unit and the Campylobacter and Helicobacter Reference Unit
• the Water and Environmental Microbiology Reference Unit (WEMRU).

As well as providing reference services LGP has an active research programme.
