The HPA lead laboratory for the North East is based in Newcastle over and provides microbiology and virology testing services to the NHS and clinical sector.

The lead clinical laboratory in Newcastle is also home to the Regional Centre for Mycobacteriology which provides tuberculosis screening and diagnosis for the North East region.
