The HPA Specialist Microbiology Service has a FW&E laboratory in York.

This laboratory provides microbiological testing for stakeholders including local authorities, the NHS and commercial companies in parts of the East Midlands, the Yorkshire and Humber area and the North East.

As well as the FW&E laboratories, the Specialist Microbiology Network (SMN) manages a chain of microbiology laboratories which provide clinical testing and diagnostic services to the NHS and health sector.
