It is difficult to estimate the number of adult (aged over 15 years) men who have sex with men (MSM) in the UK. Currently, the most reliable data source used to estimate numbers is the last National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (NATSAL) in 2000. Report amended January 2012.

Time to test for HIV: Expanded healthcare and community HIV testing in England
This report provides the final results from eight projects, in hospital, primary care and community settings funded by the Department of Health to examine models of HIV testing in these settings. All except one were in high prevalence areas (where diagnosed HIV prevalence is greater than two per thousand among 15-59 year olds). Projects ran for periods of 3-12 months between 2009 and 2010.

Time to test for HIV: Expanded healthcare and community HIV testing in England
This report provides interim results of 8 DH-funded HIV testing pilots outside of STI and antenatal clinics.
The results show that the national 2008 guidelines recommending routine offer HIV testing to new registrants in high prevalence areas are feasible, acceptable and effective in identifying previously undiagnosed persons.

Syphilis and Lymphogranuloma Venereum: Resurgent Sexually Transmitted Infections in the UK: 2009 report
Between 1997 and 2007, annual diagnoses of infectious syphilis have risen twelvefold (from 301 to 3789). Enhanced surveillance of syphilis was introduced in 1999 to collect timely information with which to build a detailed picture of the epidemic and guide interventions.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, remain one of the most important causes of illness due to infectious disease among young people (aged between 16 and 24 years old). If left untreated, many STIs can lead to long-term fertility problems (e.g.with Chlamydia or gonorrhoea). Infection with HIV or the strains of human papilloma virus (HPV) that cause cervical cancer can lead to long-term illness and possible death.

New Frontiers - National Chlamydia Screening Programme Annnual Report 2005/6
The report's title, New Frontiers, reflects the movement of the NCSP this year into a new scale of operation within a new NHS environment and the new opportunities for community-based collaborative development across the health economy of England. In this third year of implementation, the Programme has confirmed that screening for chlamydia can be delivered safely and effectively in a wide variety of medical and non-medical settings and via both statutory and voluntary providers.
