Health Protection Agency follow-up of those affected by the London bombings on 7 July 2005

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is trying to contact everyone who was exposed to the effects of the explosions in London on 7 July, and the emergency response that followed, to invite them to take part in a health follow-up. The follow up will monitor any longer-term health effects reported by those exposed to the physical and psychological effects of the bombings and learn how they have coped with the experience.

Based on the information we have available, the risk of long-term adverse health effects arising from exposure to smoke, fumes or blood in this incident is low. It should be stressed that there is no evidence that any unusual chemicals were involved in the incidents.

However we do need to be able to monitor the health of those involved in order to reassure them that this assessment is correct or to help us identify anything that was not apparent from investigations immediately after the explosions. Details of those who were exposed have already been gathered from a variety of sources where people sought medical help, and those on the list have been sent consent forms. About a quarter have replied and we are keen to hear from the rest. However, we are also hoping that those people who were not seen at any hospital or walk-in centre, but who, for example, may have breathed in smoke or fumes, or may be suffering psychological effects of the incidents will contact us.

The HPA health follow-up is managed by a Steering Committee, including representatives from the Department of Health, the National Health Service, the Health Protection Agency, the Emergency Services and Transport for London. All details will be handled in strict confidence and access to the information will only be for specialists carrying out analysis.
