Epidemiological Data

Every six months the CJD Section provides updates on the work of the CJD Incidents Panel and the progress of NATA. These are available in the Health Protection Report EI - CJD.

Monthly CJD Figures

The National CJD Surveillance Unit (NCJDSU) compiles the latest information every month to include information about the number of known cases of CJD, including variant CJD.  National CJD Surveillance Unit latest monthly figures.

Yearly Incidence Trends

Every year the Health Protection Agency produces a statistical report for the National CJD Surveillance Unit (NCJDSU). This report includes a model of the trend in the incidence of deaths and diagnosis of vCJD. Up until the year 2000 this showed exponential increases, but since then the incidence trend has declined and a quadratic exponential trend line has been used. The model is used to predict the number of deaths and diagnoses expected in the next 12 months. Differences between birth cohorts in incidence trends are also investigated.
