STIs Annual Slide Set 1999 - 2008

Introduction

Sexually transmitted infection (STI) data has been collected since 1917, from Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) services across the UK. This STI slide set presents data over 10 years up to 2008 collected from staff at GUM clinics. An increase in the number of STI episodes among clients was seen, in particular the number of chlamydia and syphilis cases.

Genital Chlamydia Infection:

Genital chlamydial infections are the most common STI infection diagnosed in GUM clinics in the UK in 2008. Rates of infection have remained high among 20-24 year group in men and 16-19 year olds in women.

Gonorrhoea:

Although an increase in gonorrhoea has been observed from 1999 to 2008 of 1%, there has been a decrease in the number diagnosed in the last four years of 11%. Annual rates of infection have always been higher in men compared to women, and higher in the 20-24 year and 16-19 year groups respectively.

Other STIs:

Three other major STI diagnoses were genital warts, herpes and syphilis where increases in diagnosis among GUM clinics over the period, 1999 to 2008 were observed. The majority of STIs were diagnosed among the younger age groups (20-24 years and 16-24 years for men and women respectively) bar syphilis among men, which were an older group of 25-34 year olds.
