Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine has been recommended for all people aged 65 and over since 2003, in addition to those at high risk under 65 years of age
Since 2003, the Health Protection Agency has been monitoring polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine (PPV) uptake in older adults. The data collected by the HPA, reflect how the programme was rolled out in three phases. Baseline data was collected in 2003 to provide a picture of vaccine coverage in the elderly before the policy was initiated .
Data is collected using a web-based reporting system called the Health Protection Informatics (HPI) website (previously known as the Vaccine Tracking website) on behalf of the Department of Health. For the 2005/06 Collection, all GP practices in England provided data electronically.
The Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine uptake survey for 2007/08 started on 1 April 2008;

For the 2007 pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine uptake survey, data was gathered via the Health Protection Informatics website for the period between 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2007 and anytime on or up until 31 March 2007. Data was also collected on vaccine uptake in the newly turned 65 years olds forming thier own cohort. The age breakdowns were as follows:
For the first time, data by gender was an optional addition for GPs to complete:
