The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.
This review encompasses the results of a number of epidemiological studies, detailed monitoring results from a major project funded by the Environment Agency, and advice sought from the Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment. The HPA concludes that there has been no new evidence to change the previous advice that living close to a well-managed landfill site does not pose a significant risk to human health. The HIV and AIDS new diagnoses database at the Centre for Infections collects information on new HIV diagnoses, first AIDS diagnoses and deaths in HIV infected individuals.
Injecting Drug Users are vulnerable to a diverse range of infectious and communicable diseases. The HPA conducts an unlinked anonymous survey of HIV and Hepatitis in Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) to measure the changing prevalence of infections in this at risk group.
