New Director of Health Protection Agency’s Centre for Infections appointed

11 December 2008

The Health Protection Agency today announced the appointment of Professor Maria Zambon as Director of its Centre for Infections.

The Health Protection Agency today announced the appointment of Professor Maria Zambon as Director of its Centre for Infections.  She will play a critical role in ensuring the Agency delivers the world class specialist public health and reference microbiology needed by its partners at local, regional, national and international levels.

Since 1995, Professor Zambon has been Director of the World Health Organisation's National Influenza Centre and International SARS laboratory, based at the Centre for Infections, Colindale, London and since 1999 has been Deputy Director of the Agency's Virus Reference Division.

Her broad ranging medical and scientific expertise in the field of infectious diseases, virology and public health, acquired over 20 years, have enabled her to develop systems and programmes which are internationally acknowledged for their scientific excellence and have been widely adopted by other countries.

For example, under Professor Zambon's direction, the Centre for Infections has developed analytical methods which are now considered global standards for analysis of influenza H5 vaccines. She has led technical developments in molecular diagnosis of influenza and other viruses and then integrated these into our national primary care clinical surveillance, and most recently has laid the foundations for European influenza antiviral resistance monitoring.

Welcoming her appointment, the Agency's Chief Executive Justin McCracken said: "I am absolutely delighted that Professor Zambon is to be the Director of our Centre for Infections.  She brings to this post not only her expertise as a world leading virologist and the respect of her colleagues and peers at home and abroad, she has also been an inspirational leader and manager and I am certain she will provide the exceptional direction and leadership required."

Professor Zambon said: "This will be a new challenge.  It is truly a privilege to be appointed to the post and entrusted with the leadership of a key HPA centre. I hope that my experience will assist shaping the next phase in development of the Agency."
