Reports of swine influenza in Mexico and US

24 April 2009

The reported events in the US and Mexico are unusual and warrant further investigation and vigilance on the part of other countries. The HPA is monitoring the situation in the US and Mexico closely.

No cases of swine flu have been identified in the UK or anywhere in Europe and at this point there is no evidence to suggest that the human swine influenza cases pose any risk to the UK public health.

There has been no change to the WHO pandemic alert level which is currently at WHO Phase 3.

There is currently a very low level of flu activity in the UK. The HPA and the NHS have systems in place, which will alert public health authorities of any unusual strain circulating in the UK.
