Each chemical incident is unique and requires a site-specific assessment.

The chemical recovery decision support tool (CRNT) works with current advice and guidance for the remediation of a chemical incident. It can assist staff in developing a recovery strategy.

The C&R RNT will:

  • help users identify, develop and evaluate a recovery strategy following a chemical or radiation incident
  • help users identify most appropriate, applicable and effective recovery options
  • provide a consistent methodology for consistent clear decision making
  • provide a template for recording information on incidents and evaluating recovery options (chemical remidiation record form, or CRRF)
  • provide an auditable decision trail (CRRF)

The templates make decision-making and record-keeping easier, while staff concentrate on a recovery strategy.

PHE are developing the CRNT working closely with:

  • Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (Defra)
  • Department for Transport (DfT)
  • Food Standards Agency (FSA)
  • Government Decontamination Service (GDS)
  • Chartered Institute for Environmental Health (CEIH)
  • local authorities
  • emergency services
  • other stakeholders involved with recovery and restoration of the environment following a chemical incident
