2Can Support Tutorials
The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI)
http://www.ebi.ac.uk/2can/tutorials/index.html
2Can is the support portal of the European Bioinformatics Institute. It provides many learning resources including these tutorials which explain how to perform some of the more common bioinformatics tasks. The tutorials are very detailed with an almost exclusive focus on tools offered by the EBI.

Bioinformatics Online:
Dr Nick Mann, University of Warwick
http://www.warwick.ac.uk/telri/Bioinfo
Separate, well explained, chapters on all major aspects of bioinformatics. Initially accessed via a text only directory web page
.

Bioinformatics: A Tutorial for Beginners
Gale Rhodes, University of Southern Maine, USA.
http://www.usm.maine.edu/~rhodes/Goodies/Matics.html
A lengthy single web page that guides the user through a thorough investigation into the human opsin genes. Covers the use of many freely available bioinformatics tools, with an optional extra section on homology modelling and simple structural analysis.

Bioinformatics: Genes, Proteins & Computers
Christine Anne Orengo, Terri Attwood, John Sgouros,
University College London, England
http://www.biochem.ucl.ac.uk/bsm/c40_ucl/
A massive resource written by one of the acknowledged leaders in bioinformatics. A good examination of many major topics, including exercises to test the user.
http://www.biochem.ucl.ac.uk/bsm/dbbrowser/c32/index.html
An online workflow exercise. The user starts with an unknown sequence and is lead through identification to structural examination.

Using Computers in Molecular Biology
Stuart M. Brown, NYU School of Medicine, New York
http://www.med.nyu.edu/rcr/rcr/course/index.html
A good clear collection of powerpoint presentations and accompanying exercises. The site also contains a nice section on the use of UNIX, however there is a slight bias towards local New York University applications.

Bioinformatics Web practical - Protein Sequence Analysis: A practical guide
Terri Attwood, Alex Michie
http://www.biochem.ucl.ac.uk/bsm/dbbrowser/jj/prefacefrm.html
Another good practical guide from T.K Attwood that compliments the paperback book of the same name. This may be a little simplistic for some more advanced users.

Elementary Sequence Analysis
Brian Golding and Dick Morton
Department of Biology, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
http://helix.biology.mcmaster.ca/721/welcome.html
Essentially an extensive HTTP text book. Contains a good UNIX section and an in-depth look at some of the more detailed aspects of bioinformatics e.g. sequence alignment algorithms and phylogenetic models. The text is excellent, unfortunately many of the images are not displayed correctly.

Computational Molecular Biology
Douglas L. Brutlag, Lee Kozar, Russ Altman
Stanford University
http://cmgm.stanford.edu/biochem218/
Presented as a prospectus a lecture based course. Covers a wide range of topics with many links to resources. Also includes some basic exercises.
