Information resources for TB and substance misuse

The National Knowledge Service has developed information resources for users and providers of substance (drug and alcohol) misuse service, in collaboration with the National Treatment Agency and Adfam (national organisation working with and for families affected by drugs and alcohol). Tuberculosis is a major public health issue among those who misuse substances and needs to be effectively controlled. These resources are aimed to increase awareness among the users, carers and healthcare workers affected by substance misuse and TB.

The resources are targeted at different audiences and include:

• Substance misuse and TB: Guidance for those affected This resource provides information on how tuberculosis is spread and the likelihood of getting infected, symptoms, management of treatment along with the complications of alcohol / drug misuse and support available.
• Substance misuse and TB: Guidance for families affected This resource provides general information on TB as well as guidance on how family members can support the affected individual, sources of further help and whether the family members are at risk.
• Substance misuse and TB for key workers (care workers, project workers and health professionals) This resource informs care workers involved in the management of those affected by tuberculosis and substance misuse about symptoms and treatment of TB. It includes information specially targeted on how the key workers can support tuberculosis treatment of individuals in their care, and whether staff themselves are at risk.

These information resources are being evaluated, as part of National Knowledge Service KS - TB , and we welcome any feedback.
