National Knowledge Service - TB along with the Map of Medicine have updated and reviewed the tuberculosis care pathway algorithm within the map of medicine to reflect the latest release of the NICE TB Clinical Guidelines.

One of the key objectives of the National Knowledge Service - Tuberculosis is to review the online decision support information resources available to NHS staff through the 'Map of Medicine' (MOM). MOM provides evidence-based best practice information to healthcare professionals through graphical representations of care pathways (clinical algorithms).

The MoM interface allows clinicians to navigate though a broad set of knowledge to the information that is required. Map of Medicine organises medical knowledge into more than 300 pathways, demonstrating treatment options and implications and drawing on Best Practice guidance for each step of the pathway.

In this project, NKS - TB has reviewed the TB care pathway to ensure that it reflects recent guidelines and links to relevant information resources. This method of making information available to clinicians, especially trainees, will enable them to gain fast access to the information they will need to help patients more effectively.

The main updates that have been made as result of this review of the MOM TB algorithms are:

  1. Update of respiratory TB algorithms to ensure consistency with the latest release of the NICE guidelines.
  2. Development and integration of a Public Health algorithm as a significant addition to the care pathway.
  3. Non-respiratory algorithms have been added to the TB care pathway

These pathways will be made freely available through the Local Service Providers who have access to the Map of Medicine.
