East of England Region

The Regional Epidemiology Unit (REU) collates and analyses information on infections and environmental exposures with the objective of rapid detection of outbreaks, incidents and trends requiring action to protect the Public's Health.

The REU works closely with partners in the wider HPA, the National Health Service and Government including Hospitals and Community Health Services, Primary Care Trusts, the Eastern Region Public Health Observatory (erpho), the Government  Office and Strategic Health Authority for the East of England, Local Authorities, and DEFRA

Our team:
  • Produces a range of regional surveillance reports and analyses for use by clinical and other health service colleagues.
  • Maintains laboratory-based reporting of infections from all 18 Hospital Microbiology laboratories in the East of England and runs enhanced surveillance on a number of important infectious diseases.
  • Provides practical, technical and epidemiological support to local Health Protection Units, National Health Service and Local Authority colleagues.
  • Contributes Epidemiological and Information Analysis resources to National Epidemiological and Emergency Responses
  • Undertakes applied Research and Development in epidemiology and Information analysis
  • Provides education and training in Health Protection for the Faculty of Public Health's Training Programme; Cambridge University  at undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels; and to Clinical and Nursing colleagues .
