Enhanced Tuberculosis Surveillance in England and Wales started in 1999. This replaced a previous work programme of five-yearly national tuberculosis surveys. The aim of the Enhanced TB Surveillance system is to provide more detailed and comparable information on the epidemiology of tuberculosis, looking at the incidence and risk factors in subgroups of the population. The minimum dataset includes notification details, demographic, clinical and microbiological information on all cases of tuberculosis reported by clinicians.
