Experts look for possible links in Legionnaires’ disease cases

25 September 2009

We can confirm that we are investigating two apparently sporadic cases of Legionnaires' disease in the Fleetwood area of Lancashire.

A third case (in the Blackpool area) has been ruled out of the investigation as the infection was acquired abroad.

The two patients are in hospital and one is said to be seriously ill. The other is making good progress towards recovery.

Dr. Steven Gee, Consultant in Communicable Disease Control with the HPA's Cumbria and Lancashire Health Protection Unit, said: "We are looking into the cases with colleagues from NHS North Lancashire and Wyre Borough Council's Environmental Health Department.

"People should remember that sporadic cases of Legionnaires' disease are not uncommon and it may very well be that the cases are not linked. However, as they occurred at the same time in broadly the same geographical area, it is important that we investigate.

"If we do find that there is a source of infection in the locality, we will of course take immediate steps to eliminate the risk."

Note to editors

Legionnaires' Disease is caused by a germ named legionella pneumophilia, a bacteria that is common in standing environmental water.

It only becomes a problem when faulty or badly maintained equipment, such as spa baths, air conditioning systems or cooling towers create circumstances that make it possible for people to breather a fine spray of infected water into their lungs.

Legionnaires' Disease does not spread from person-to-person.

Early symptoms are flu-like with muscle aches, tiredness, headaches, dry cough and fever that can lead to pneumonia. As with any pneumonia, the patient can become very unwell. Diarrhoea, confusion and kidney failure may occur in addition to chest and breathing problems.

People who feel unwell with any of the possible symptoms should consult their GP.
