STBRU: reference and diagnostic services

Sexually transmitted bacteria reference unit (STBRU) provides national and international laboratory reference services for a number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

STBRU is part of Public Health England’s bacteria reference department (BRD).

STBRU is made up of 2 sections:

  • specialist and reference services
  • molecular epidemiology and surveillance

STBRU services

STBRU provides national reference facilities for bacterial sexually transmitted pathogens including:

  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae
  • Treponema pallidum
  • Chlamydia trachomatis
  • Mycoplasma genitalium
  • Trichomonas vaginalis

STBRU receives diagnostic and reference samples which are analysed by a wide range of methodologies in accordance with customer needs and also performs surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and investigates molecular epidemiology of bacterial STIs through various programmes and projects.
