The laser was first successfully demonstrated in 1960. Initially its use was restricted to specialist applications by users who were familiar with laser technology and (usually) the safety implications. Lasers are now used in a vast array of applications, often with the user unaware that a laser is involved. For example, they are used in the home (CD players), in the office (laser printers), in industry (materials processing) and hospitals.
The HPA is at the forefront of work on the development of national and international laser safety standards. The HPA runs the Laser Safety Forum in conjunction with Loughborough University ( www.lboro.ac.uk).
The HPA is a corporate member of the Laser Institute of America ( www.laserinstitute.org) and a member of the International Laser Display Association ( www.ilda.wa.org).
