Novel and Dangerous Pathogens (NADP) is based at the Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response, Porton Down. The NADP provides specialist diagnostic services for dangerous diseases(including anthrax, tularaemia, viral haemorrhagic fevers, Rickettsia and a wide range of arboviruses).
Supported by an active research and development programme designed to provide a capability to identify, characterise and study the pathogenesis and causative agents of new and emerging pathogens, devise diagnostic tests and study methods of control including vaccines, therapeutics and other measures.
NADP provides a surge capacity to support other laboratories and specialises in work at containment levels 3 and 4. The Biosafety Unit develop new protocols for safe working with containment equipment based upon experimental evidence and validates decontamination methods in the laboratory and environment. Also providing services for environmental detection of specific agents and have a deployable BioResponse Team.
The NADP offers training courses nationally and internationally for working in containment laboratories and for the diagnosis and handling of specific agents. A considerable amount of our income comes from international and commercial sources and the list of projects ranges from FLUSECURE, an EU-funded programme to support industry in delivering new influenza vaccines in the shortest possible time, to novel biosensors and therapeutics testing in vitro and in vivo.
