  • MetSoc 2010 poster v1.pdf (PDF, 476 KB)
Poster at Met Soc 2010: Mars sample return (MSR) missions are key elements in our continuing exploration of the planet and are strategic in planning future manned missions to Mars. In MSR missions, the ‘chain of contact’ between Mars and the Earth must avoid potentially hazardous interaction between Earth’s biosphere and the returned samples. Samples in a sample receiving facility (SRF) they must not be contaminated by any materials or processes that damage or alter them, in any way which could prove detrimental to future scientific investigations.

  • Use of Hyperspectral Imaging to detect HCAI microorganisms (PDF, 420 KB)
HPA Conference 2009 Poster: Reducing the incidence of healthcare associated infections(HCAI)is a priority for the NHS. This study examined the effectiveness of Hyperspectral imaging(HSi)techniques for rapidly measuring levels of biological contamination in healthcare environments.

  • Aerosolised survival of staphylococcus (PDF, 437 KB)
Goldberg drum work: Aerosol dispersal might play a role in disseminating hospital-acquired MRSA. This study measured the survival of Staphylococcus epidermidis(a surrogate for S.aureus)in the air and the effect of relative humidity on the survival time of the pathogen.

  • Defining the role of ECDC in biosafety: establishment of a Biorisk Expert Group (PDF, 1.4 MB)
ECDC Poster presented at EBSA April 2010. Following an open tender process, the ECDC has established an expert group with expertise in all areas of laboratory biosafety and biosecurity(biorisk), capable of providing both ad hoc advice on biorisk topics of interest to ECDC, as well as identifying knowledge gaps and strategic areas of research in the area of biorisk management.
