The Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards is publishing a series of Contaminated Land Information Sheets. These documents provide advice on emerging issues related to contaminated land. They have been produced so that the HPA can provide advice in a consistent and standardised manner.

Contaminated Land Information Sheet - Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
Several PAHs and mixtures of PAHs have been shown to be genotoxic and to cause cancer in experimental animals. Humans may be exposed to PAHs in the air, water and food, or dermally, orally and by inhalation to PAH residues present in soil, particularly in former “brownfield” sites, such as former gasworks sites. It is important to assess the risk posed by PAHs present at such sites.

Contaminated Land Information Sheet - Cadmium
In the UK, cadmium is naturally present in many soils, at concentrations that exceed the Soil
Guideline Value. However, there is little evidence that adverse health effects occur following general environmental exposure to cadmium.
