This current 2004 Review recommends adopting criteria for the designation of specialist NPIS centres and consultant staff. It proposes four areas of specialist support be recognised:
1. expert clinical toxicological advice,
2. development and maintenance of TOXBASE and allied software,
3. delivery of local education and training outreach programmes,
4. a network of telephone support services for complex diagnosis and treatment problems.
