Poisoning accounts for over 100,000 NHS hospital admissions in the UK each year and results in a signi?cant workload for hospital emergency departments and minor injuries units. The HPA commissions the four units of the National Poisons Information Service (NPIS) in Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Newcastle to provide information and support on the diagnosis and management of poisoning to health professionals in the UK, including NHS Direct (in England and Wales) and NHS 24 (in Scotland). The NPIS also provides advice and support on drug and chemical exposure during pregnancy through the National Teratology Information Service (NTIS).
