Since the first case of documented seroconversion after a specific occupational exposure to HIV was
reported in 1984, national or regional systems for the surveillance of occupationally acquired HIV
infection have been developed in most of the countries mentioned in these summary tables. These tables
contain details of all the published cases of occupationally acquired HIV infection of which we are aware, but the true incidence of occupationally acquired HIV infection is unknown, and is likely to be much higher.
