Gastrointestinal infections annual report, 2010
This is the first annual report from the Gastrointestinal Infections section of the Gastrointestinal, Emerging and Zoonotic Infections (GEZI) department. The GEZI department covers a wide range of gastrointestinal organisms, including bacterial, viral and parasitic pathogens. A number of surveillance systems are in place; most of which rely on laboratory reporting.

This guidance gives recommendations on the management of outbreaks of vomiting and/or diarrhoea in hospitals and community health and social care settings, including nursing and residential homes. They are not specifically intended to cover schools, colleges, prisons, military establishments, hotels or shipping although there will be some general principles that will be of use in managing outbreaks in those institutions.

Clostridium difficile Ribotyping Network (CDRN) for England and Northern Ireland 2009/2010 report
Since the introduction of the CDRN, reports of C. difficile in England have fallen markedly. Reports of deaths associated with Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) have also now started to decrease. It is plausible that better access to the ribotyping and enhanced fingerprinting information provided by CDRN may have facilitated better local investigation and control of CDI cases.
