The purpose of this document is to provide advice, in particular to government departments, on the radiological protection objectives to be applied to the disposal of all types of solid radioactive waste, including wastes arising in gaseous or liquid form which will be converted to solid form prior to disposal.
The environment agencies have recently published revised guidance on requirements for authorisation. Their new documents include an appendix describing how they have drawn on HPA advice in the development of the radiological protection criteria in their guidance. The documents from the environment agencies and the HPA contain different approaches and the following exchange of letters clarifies the link between the HPA advice and the environment agencies’ regulatory guidance documents.
