Dosimetry is a cornerstone of radiological protection. Area monitoring and personal dosimetry are used basically to demonstrate compliance with the law. They firstly show compliance with dose limits and secondly that nothing has changed since the original assessment of the work practice was made. However, nothing is foolproof and things do go wrong. People do get exposed to radiation without being monitored and personal monitors do receive doses when they are not being worn. It is in these situations that biological dosimetry comes into play.
