Carbon dioxide

 

Key Points

Fire

  • Not flammable
  • Reacts vigorously with aluminium and sodium dioxide, caesium oxide, lithium, magnesium and sodium dioxide, potassium hydride, sodium and titanium
  • Carbon dioxide dissolves in water to form carbonic acid
  • Emits toxic fumes of carbon monoxide when heated to decomposition
  • In the event of a fire involving carbon dioxide, use fine water spray and normal fire kit with breathing apparatus

Health

  • Toxic by inhalation and skin contact
  • Inhalation may cause headache, dizziness, sweating, shortness of breath, increased breathing rate, tachycardia, drowsiness, fast heart rate and loss of consciousness
  • Skin exposure to dry ice may cause frost bite

Environment

  • Avoid release into the envionment
  • Inform the Environment Agency of substantial releases
