Extreme heat is dangerous and has the potential to be fatal, especially for older people or those with serious health problems.  Even in mild heatwaves which may affect the United Kingdom, people who need not die do so.  We also know that timely preventive measures can reduce these excess rates.

The report, Health Effects of Climate Change in the UK 2008, commissioned by the Department of Health from a group of independent scientists, estimated that over the next decade there is a one in four risk of South East England experiencing a serious heatwave, which will cause over 3,000 immediate deaths and more than 6,350 heat-related deaths throughout that summer.
