Environmental health

Ensuring safe and healthy conditions at public accommodations and venues is a key element of an international sporting event.  The massive food service operations, common and excessively used drinking and recreational water supplies, and crowded accommodations and shared sanitary facilities provide many opportunities to expose athletes, staff, visitors, and residents to environmental health hazards. Health officials and organizers need to ensure the necessary resources to prevent exposure to environmental hazards and to inspect and enforce safety regulations as they pertain to such topics as food preparation and service, drinking water, recreational water, air quality, solid and hazardous waste, and insect vectors.
