A novel orthobunyavirus associated with disease in animals and provisionally named Schmallenberg virus has been identified in Europe. This followed the investigation of symptoms first observed in dairy cows in Germany during the summer of 2011 which had included fever, poor general condition, anorexia and reduced milk yield (by up to 50%).
The virus has since been shown to be associated with congenital malformations in newborn lambs and other ruminants. In January 2012, the virus was shown to be present in affected lambs in the UK.
