In addition to foodborne outbreaks, the scope of HPA eFOSS also includes the surveillance of non-foodborne gastrointestinal outbreaks.
These non-foodborne outbreaks inlclude those where illness was associated with recreational water exposure, other/outdoor events (environmental exposure e.g. contact with mud at outdoor events), contact with animals and/ or their faeces and outbreaks of verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC) mediated through person to person transmission.
The types of gastrointestinal outbreaks not included within the remit of eFOSS are household outbreaks, person to person and community norovirus outbreaks, and those outbreaks associated with foreign travel.
