Candidaemia rates were highest in infants and the elderly. Rates were higher in males than females in age groups older than 45 years and those less than 1 year (figure 2), particularly pronounced in the elderly (≥75 years) where the rate of infection in males is more than double that of females in this age group. This age group has also seen a large increase in rates of infection, where in males the rate increased from 14.49 in 2009 to 20.30 in 2010, and in females the rate increased from 7.06 to 9.50 (per 100,00 population).
Rates in male infants (under one year) have decreased between 2009 and 2010 from 16.47 to 11.58, whereas the rate of infection in female infants has increased slightly from 10.57 to 11.88. The change represents a further move away from the large excess in rates in male infants compared to female seen in earlier years.
