New HIV Diagnoses East Midlands 2011 Part 2 (PDF, 528 KB)
In 2011, as reported to end of December 2011, there were 219 new HIV diagnoses. The 2011 figure represents a 19% decrease on the 271 new diagnoses in 2002. The overall UK decrease since 2002 was 12%. Figures for 2011are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2011, an estimated 41% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 28%) and 30% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 41%).

There were 3,142 HIV-diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in the East Midlands who accessed HIV-related care in 2010. Two-thirds (66%; 2,046) of these were individuals infected through heterosexual sex and more than a quarter (27%; 831) through sex between men.
