In 2011, as reported to end of December 2011, there were 293 new HIV diagnoses. The 2011 figure represents a 11% decrease on the 328 new diagnoses in 2002. Figures for 2011 are likely to rise as further reports are received. The overall UK increase since 2001 was 12%. In 2011 an estimated 36% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 28%) and 37% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 41%).

There were 3,494 HIV diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in Yorkshire and The Humber who accessed HIV-related care in 2010. Two-thirds (64%; 2,204) of these were individuals infected through heterosexual sex and 30% (1,096) were infected through sex between men.
