New Diagnoses of HIV

In 2011, as reported to end of December 2011, there were 5,069 new HIV diagnoses. The 2011 figure represents a 15% decrease on the 6,019 new diagnoses in 2001. The overall UK increase since 2002 was 12%. Figures for 2011 are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2011, an estimated 28% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 28%) and 41% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 41%).

Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland reported the largest proportional increases from 2002 to 2011. In 2011, East Midlands, West Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber, and East of England reported the highest proportion (35% or over) of newly diagnosed individuals who acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity. Northern Ireland, the Wales, Scotland and South West reported the highest proportion of individuals who acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (50% or over).

There were 63,901 HIV diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in England who accessed HIV-related care in 2010, this is a 6.1% increase from the number seen in 2008 (60,217) and almost three times the number seen in 2001 (23,620). Overall, where information is available, 44% (27,164) of these were infected through sex between men and 51% (31,961) through heterosexual sex.
