In 2011, as reported to end of December 2011, there were 80 new HIV diagnoses. The 2011 figure represents a 196% increase on the 27 new diagnoses in 2002. The overall UK increase since 2002 was 12%. Figures for 2011are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2011, an estimated 10% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 28%) and 53% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 41%).Although it should be noted that Northern Ireland has relatively low numbers of new HIV diagnoses compared to other areas, it has the highest proportional increase from 2002. Northern Ireland has the lowest proportion of new HIV diagnoses that are among black African individuals infected heterosexually and the highest proportion of new HIV diagnoses that are among white men infected through sex between men.
