New HIV Diagnoses South Central 2011 Part 2 (PDF, 445 KB)
In 2011, as reported to end of December 2011, there were 255 new HIV diagnoses. The 2011 figure represents a 31% decrease on the 371 new diagnoses in 2002. The overall UK decrease since 2002 was 12%. Figures for 2011 are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2011, an estimated 31% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 28%) and 41% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 41%).

There were 3,436 HIV diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in the South Central SHA who accessed HIV-related care in 2010. Two-thirds (65%: 2,148) of these were individuals infected through heterosexual sex and 30% (1,006) were infected through sex between men.
