New HIV Diagnoses Wales 2011 Part 2 (PDF, 437 KB)
In 2011, as reported to end of December 2011, there were 160 new HIV diagnoses. The 2011 figure represents a 100% increase on the 80 new diagnoses in 2002. The overall UK increase since 2002 was 12%. Figures for 2011 are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2011, an estimated 18% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 28%) and 51% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 41%).

There were 1,321 HIV diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in Wales who accessed HIV-related care in 2010, this 245% increase from the number seen in 2001 (383). More than half (53%; 691) of these were infected through sex between men and 41% (535) through heterosexual sex.
