New HIV Diagnoses West Midlands 2011 Part 2 (PDF, 528 KB)
In 2011, as reported to end of December 2011, there were 406 new HIV diagnoses. The 2011 figure represents a 6% decrease on the 431 new diagnoses in 2002. The overall UK decrease since 2002 was 12%. Figures for 2011 are likely to rise as further reports are received. In 2011, an estimated 38% of newly diagnosed individuals acquired their infection heterosexually and were of black African ethnicity (UK average 28%) and 28% acquired their infection through sex between men and were of white ethnicity (UK average 41%).

There were 4,523 HIV diagnosed persons (all ages) resident in the West Midlands who accessed HIV-related care in 2010. The West Midlands had the largest proportional increase in the number of residents accessing HIV-related care over the last decade (401%; from 903 in 2001). More than one-third (36%; 1,496) were infected through sex between men and 60% (2,501) were infected through heterosexual sex.
