Sexually transmitted infections in Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) in the United Kingdom: 2011 (PowerPoint Presentation, 604 KB)There were 29,647 MSM (all ages) seen for HIV care in 2010 in the UK, more than double the number seen in 2001 (13,357). The proportion of HIV diagnosed MSM among all people seen for HIV care decreased from 51% (13,357/26,088) in 2001 to 43% in 2010 (29,647/69,424). During the same period, the median age of MSM accessing HIV care increased from 37 to 42 years. In 2010, 24% (7,260) of MSM were aged 50 years and older.
In England, the number of HIV diagnosed MSM was highest in London in 2010 (51%; 13,967/27,161). This was followed by North West SHA (12%; 3,184/27,161) and South East Coast SHA (9%; 2,439/27,161).
Where information was available, 80% (23,745/29,566) of MSM received anti-retroviral therapy.
