Mass gatherings (including sporting events)

International mass gatherings, such as sporting events like the FIFA World Cup or the Olympic Games, or religious events like the Hajj in Mecca, attract thousands of visitors from all over the world. Where many people are gathered together for such events there is an increased risk of transmission of disease, which can have implications both for the host country and the countries to which visitors return.

Those planning to travel to international mass gatherings must be adequately prepared for their trip and make sure they have travel insurance. The National Travel Health Network and Centre provides travel health advice for each country and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website should always be consulted for information about security issues or any travel restrictions. The Health Protection Agency provides advice for health professionals who may see and treat travellers returning from mass gathering events overseas.
